Why can't I buy one single pixel? 7. How long will the site be online? 8. If you want money for your house, why don't you get a job? 1. What is the idea behind a Million Pixel ad page? The original Million Dollar Homepage was begun by Alex Tew as a method to raise funds for attending University in Brittain. The purpose behing my page is to raise money for support (because I have ovarian cancer) and to raise money to support those groups that support cancer patients and cancer research. With a Million Pixel home page, you are invited to buy blocks of 100 pixels (10x10 squared) to place your ad, greeting, message, whatever, along with a link to more information about your space. They're beginning to crop up all over the Internet for all sorts of reasons (presumably to make some money for the seller and to provide advertizing for the buyer). My home page is 'seeded' with advertizements for several of the cancer organizations that I encourage you to help me support (and, I'll even make it so that you can get the tax write-off, instead of me!). As pixels are sold, those ads will be 'bumped off' (but they won't mind, because it means they'll have received hundreds of dollars). My home page is divided in 800 by 1,250 blocks (so it's visible without scrolling on an 800-resolution screen), creating 10,000 blocks of 10x10 pisels (therefore, there are 1,000,000 pixels in total). Anything smaller than a 10x10 block would be too small to display anything meaningful. You can buy as blocks of pixels as long as there are some available. When you buy pixels, you can then display an image/ad/logo of your choice in the space you have purchased. I will also provide a link through to your own website. (however, I will not accept obscene or offensive images, nor allow links to X-rated sites). The pixels you bpurchase will be displayed on the homepage permanently. As the content grows, I reserve the right to move the ads around, to accomodate new purchases. But, once purchased, your ad will appear on the homepage for at least 5 years following the sale of 50% of the space. Return to Top 2. Who are you? My name is Darbie Marlin. I have been a web page developer for ten years. In the community of Spokane, Washington, that's not a top paying job. My house needs a new roof, new windows, new carpet. And, hey, I could use a vacation. In September, 2006, I was diagnosed as having Ovarian cancer (the silent killer, because it is usually not caught until it's too late). As if making house payments on a web developer's income wasn't hard enough, going through chemo takes the sauce right out of one, and there just don't seem to be enough hours in a day to break even, let alone to get ahead. I'm hoping that, by asking you to buy my pixels, you'll help me to help myself, as well as to benefit other agencies trying to help people like me. (and, hey, if you want to support breast cancer research, I know it's the top flavor of the day, so I don't even mind sharing with them). Return to Top 3. You've got to be kidding? I could wish that having cancer was a joke. I thought I was going to be okay with being bald, but I find that, after years of having hair more than two feet long, I just don't like it very much. Nor have I appreciated losing my eye brows and most of my very long eye-lashes. Return to Top 4. What will you do with the money? My first priority is to pay the bills that have been racking up with my illness, plus to contribute to the organizations that support people like me, people with cancer. Then, I want to put some love into my home: pay off its mortgage, re-roof it, recarpet it, get new windows. I'd like to experience the American Dream of owning my home, a new car and some change to appreciate it. Life shouldn't be such a struggle, just to get by. Return to Top 5. Why should I buy your pixels? My million dollar home page is the first of its scope aspiring to donate so much to non-profits. The Million Penny homepage is donating 10% to the Guide Dogs of America. Once he sells out, that's $10,000. Return to Top 6. Why can't I buy one single pixel? Practically speaking, if you only wanted to buy a single pixel for 25¢, there are two problems. A single pixel cannot really display any meaningful message. And, more importantly, if I had 10,000 people who wanted to buy a single pixel, that's a lot of work for each quarter! Return to Top 7. How long will the site be online? The site will be online for 5 years guaranteed (at least until February 10, 2011), however the aim is to keep it up (or have my estate keep it up) at least 5 years after the last pixel is sold. Get your add on my million-pixel home page, and you'll be promoting your own business, as well as supporting a good cause (not to mention, helping me through a despate illness in a more comfortable manner) Return to Top 8. If you want money for your house, why don't you get a job? Going through chemo therapy is hard! Sometimes, I sleep more than 14 hours a day. With doctor appointments, with physical therapy, there aren't enough hours in the day. Plus, in the Spokane market, there aren't many jobs that pay a living wage, to help a person who's a bit behind to get caught up, much less, get ahead. If I could find a decent job, at the moment, I just don't have the stamina to do it. But, running a web site, ranking in the search engines, this is something that I can do in my spare time. Plus, as I've said, this gets the benefit of sharing the wealth with others, to make us that much closer to the cure. Return to Top |
